Cocoa: What price is fair - and for whom?

Around six million people worldwide make a living from growing cocoa. The key issue is therefore a living income to ensure the livelihoods and quality of life of farming families. So far, however, the majority of farmers have not been able to secure this livelihood by growing cocoa. There are various efforts in the industry to increase the income of farming families to a living income level - but almost all of them are based on measures that exclude the price of cocoa. This paper shows how the cocoa value chain is structured, explains the problem of fluctuating cocoa prices and highlights the various solutions that aim to provide a living income for cocoa farmers.
